Structural Steel - Helipad Closure Update

Updated January 28, 2015

Steel erection is well underway and we are making good progress. Due to rain, the Contractor had to push the crane arrival and steel erection that was scheduled to begin on or about December 1st, to December 15th. An additional crane has been brought onsight to install more of the drilled concrete piles near the cafeteria building.

For certain portions of this work, both cranes will encroach into the helipad clear zone atop the existing hospital building. This will require the closure of the Fainer building helipad for approximately 8 weeks from December 15th thru the first week in February.  During this period, the alternate landing site located in the upper parking lot near Foothill Road will be used for emergency daytime helicopter operations.  Additionally, over the following few months, there will be occasional days when use of a tall crane will be necessary and the upper parking lot landing site will be used.  Some addtional noise and truck traffic will be experienced during the steel erection.

The use of the upper parking lot landing site will be limited to Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.  Nighttime and weekend landings will continue to be on the helipad atop the existing hospital building.  Historically, helicopter landings occur on average of 2-3 times per week with the majority occurring on weekends.

East Alley Electrical Work

Beginning in February, there will be construction activity along the east alley of the existing Hospital in order to install conduit for the Hospital Replacement Wing project.  The work is necessary to provide the electrical service for the new wing.

Work will involve subsurface explorations and subsequent installation of conduit, all of which may involve construction related noise. Work will likely progress from the south (near Loma Vista Road) to the north.  All work will be done within the Work Zone shown in the graphic below, and will be done in phases until work is completed.

The working times for this construction effort are between the hours of 8am and 1pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional work on Saturdays. Work is expected to last for approximately three months.
